Nikola Tesla Correspondence

The largest group in this series contains 914 images of communications between Nikola Tesla and George Scherff dated January 4, 1899 to December 9, 1939. As Tesla's secretary, Mr. Scherff was responsible for daily operations at the New York Houston St. laboratory while the historic experiments into the varied nature of wireless propagation were being conducted in Colorado Springs and they continued their association for a number of years afterwards. Other correspondents represented in the collection include J.P. Morgan (Sr. & Jr.), George Westinghouse, Jr., Robert Underwood Johnson, as well as three letters penned by Samuel Clemens.

The microfilm negatives used to create these prints were made by the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade, Serbia and given to the Library of Congress in 1961, based upon an order made by the Library on January 12, 1959. While the negative images vary in density an effort was made to compensate for deviations during printing. Nevertheless, some of the images are faint or dark. In addition, changes in orientation and relative size sometimes occur. Nevertheless, the 2,316 images contained in this collection will provide hours of fascinating reading and provide new insights into the public and private life of this remarkable individual.
